Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha)
Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha) has long been used to reduce hypertension. Extracts of hawthorn berry, leaves, and flowers are used for this purpose. The hypotensive agents found in hawthorn extract are procyanidin flavonoids. Hawthorn extract is standardized to contain 1.8% of vitexin-41-rhamnoside or 10% procyanidins or 18% procyanidinic oligomers. Procyanidins and procyanidinic oligomers inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (which results in the production of angiotensin II, a powerful vasoconstrictor and stimulator of aldosterone production). |
The procyanidins have also an antispasmodic and sedative action. In the treatment of hypertension, typical doses of hawthorn extract standardized to contain vitexin rhamnoside, are 360 to 720 mg per day. The effect of hawthorn extract is cumulative and should be taken for at least 3 months to achieve full efficacy.
Hawthorn extract has the following actions:
- Dilation of blood vessels, which may aid in blood pressure reduction
- Increase of peripheral blood circulation - also aids in blood pressure reduction
- Reduction of frequency and severity of arrhythmias
- Increase of coronary artery circulation, which may counter impaired blood flow due to vascular disease
- Decrease in the frequency and severity of angina
- Action as a mild sedative which can be used for insomnia due to anxiety
CoenzymeQ10 or ubiquinone
CoenzymeQ10 or ubiquinone is a factor involved in mitochondrial oxidation, coupled to phosphorylation.
Most of the research on coenzyme Q10 has been conducted in Japan, where it is widely used. Extensive double blind studies have been conducted on its use to treat hypertension and heart disease. It is estimated that over 10 million Japanese are taking coenzyme Q10 for heart disease.
CoenzymeQ10 has the following actions:
Reduction of blood pressure in hypertensive patients
Many studies have shown the deficiency of Coenzyme Q10 in hypertensive patients.
In one clinical study done on hypertensive patients, there was a 10.6-mm Hg and 7.7 mm Hg fall in the systolic and diastolic pressure respectively. There is a definite and gradual improvement in hypertensive patients, and about 50% of patients sufficiently improved to reduce hypertensive medication in 4 to 5 months . Another study showed a drop of blood pressure in 23 hypertensive individuals and in 14 had a mean drop of blood pressure of 10%.
Increase in endurance in aerobic exercise
Coenzyme Q10 also increases endurance to aerobic exercise by improving cardiac oxygen utilization. In cases where cardiac drugs are required (many of which have a low toxicity therapeutic range) coenzyme Q10 has allowed lower doses to be used than would normally be given.
Improvement in myocardial function
A highly significant improvement in left ventricular wall thickness and diastolic function was found2. An eight-year study of 424 patients found a New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional scale improvement of 1 -3 in 58%, 28% and 1.2% of patients respectively.
Protection of heart in ischemic and hypotensive episodes
Many studies have now shown the protective function in cases of ischemic and hypoxic episodes, such as during myocardial infarction.
Reduction of frequency of arrhythmias
There is evidence of a reduction in the frequency of arrhythmias - however larger scale studies are needed. |
